Jon Favreau Departs Iron Man

15 Dec

In a move that is good for Jon Favreau, and most likely ominous for the Iron Man franchise, Favreau has decided to step away from the directorial chair to focus on other projects. He had this to say in his recent Twitter feed:

“It’s true I am directing Magic Kingdom and not Iron Man 3. I’ve had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best.”

He also had a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times after wrapping up production on his latest project, Cowboys & Aliens. In his talk with the Times he also added that his reasons for leaving Iron Man weren’t due to monetary issues or lack of cohesiveness in the project, but instead because he wanted to find a project that could “light a fire” in him and to work on something that will “blow people away, which is easier to do with a project that isn’t loaded with expectations.”

You're right Jon, I don't really have any expectations for this one.

He says he views this as a “graduation” more than a “divorce” from Marvel, since he is after all, still producing the upcoming Avengers film.

This seems like a good move for Favreau, considering that Kevin Feige, the head Marvel honcho, used the second flame reference in this article and said that he “is excited to bring some more fire to the franchise.” To me, this implies that Feige was probably loading up on excessive special effects, multiple villains and a ridiculous love triangle. I think we all saw how that worked out before:

That's right Spider-man 3...hang your head in shame.

Favreau should be relieved to get out while he still can and focus on more personal projects.

What are your thoughts on this decision? Is it the best thing for Iron Man? Favreau?

If Marvel wants more fire... they should hire a Flamer.

I couldn’t resist an Arrested Development reference.
